What Would You Call Evidence? ›
Perhaps the central stance of the critical/skeptical atheist for his or her lack of belief in a god is that there is no evidence for a god.
So, a major question to consider is, “What counts as evidence for God?”
I think this question to be a tough one, as the individual is forced by the…
I decided to reblog because my answer is a bit lengthy, but here we go. There is that which gods have in common, namely power over the elements and power to suspend physical laws and/or causality. It is no mystery, if I were a chain smoker, the likelihood of getting cancer is higher. Thus, if I get cancer, it would be an effect caused by my chain smoking. However, a god would be able to heal me of this cancer because I serve him/her/it. This sort of suspension has never happened outside of scriptures. Moreover, if a believer claims to have experienced this kind of suspension, a natural explanation for this suspension is not automatically cancelled out. As a matter of fact, a natural explanation is always possible. If a believer wasn’t blinded by belief, he/she would realize that there is a natural explanation for said miracle, faith healing, or deliverance from demonic possession. So, can physical laws be suspended? I don’t think so.
That leaves us with the last bit. Can they have power over the elements? Well, from what I’ve noticed, Yahweh punishes people via hurricane in hurricane prone areas. Pastor John Hagee believed Katrina was punishment from god. Well, New Orleans has always been exempt from hurricanes right? Wrong. Therefore, gods have no power over the elements. The elements behave in a way that can be explained naturally; furthermore, the elements can be found on other planets — planets that are completely unaffected by our “sin” (i.e. Neptune). So, if they aren’t controlling the elements or suspending physical laws, what reason do we have to believe in them? What evidence is there? Well, we can at least ask for a correlation between a given scripture and science. Nonetheless, we can’t find such a correlation. Not only is the evidence lacking, but I find that evidence may never be presented.
